History of the Maltese Cross

Since the days of the first crusade, the cross has stood as a symbol of the Christian warrior’s commitment not only to defend the Holy Land but also to safeguard the lives of comrades. The Maltese Cross, now emblematic of modern firefighters, traces its roots back to a specific crusader insignia—the cross of the Knights of St. John of Jerusalem.

These knights, among the earliest orders of warrior monks devoted to Christendom, took solemn vows of poverty, chastity and obedience. Renowned as Hospitallers, they initially operated a hospital for pilgrims in Jerusalem. As conflict engulfed the crusade-ridden territories, the order transitioned into a militarized force while continuing their mission to protect pilgrims and provide charitable aid to the infirm and impoverished.

Clad in extensive armor that obscured their identities in battle, the Knights faced challenges distinguishing friend from foe. Thus, the need for a distinctive emblem became paramount. Given their dedication to a sacred cause, they chose the Cross of Calvary—a white or silver cross set against a dark backdrop. Following the fall of Jerusalem in 1187, the Knights relocated to the island of Malta.

During the tumultuous crusades, many Knights assumed the role of firefighters out of necessity. Faced with adversaries resorting to incendiary tactics like bomb-throwing and naphtha-laden warships, numerous Knights perished in flames while others valiantly rescued their comrades from fiery peril. These brave acts marked them as the earliest firefighters, honored by fellow Crusaders with a Badge of Honor—a cross akin to the emblem worn by firefighters today.

The Maltese Cross serves as a symbol of protection, signifying the firefighter’s readiness to sacrifice their life for others, echoing the selfless deeds of Crusaders who laid down their lives for their brethren centuries ago.
